History of Deerwood

Deerwood Country Club was founded by the Skinner family. In 1899, Richard Skinner sought pine trees for their sap so that he could create turpentine for his fledgling marine supply business. He acquired over 40,000 acres of land, and in the 1920’s, upon his passing, the land was divided among Skinner’s six sons. Richard gave his son, also Richard, the land upon which Deerwood would eventually be built. Richard then gave the land to his children Richard Jr., Bryant, and Dottie Skinner.

In 1960, Bryant Skinner developed the original golf course of Deerwood, and George Cobb was the course architect. Bryant then built his own home in Deerwood and initiated plans to develop more land to create the country club community. He named the community Deerwood due to the numerous deer that roamed the land, in addition to wild turkeys, racoons, and even bears.

Today, Deerwood Country Club features over 900 homes and continues to grow with a fairly recent development of 140 acres of the north side of the neighborhood with plots for 26 additional homesites.
